Few would argue that James Halliday is the most astute wine critic in the business today. In his recent 100 Top Drops in The Australian the respected critic showered praise on several outstanding Margaret River wines.

Basing his scoring system on a 1 to 100 system (100 being the best), the Margaret River selections had scores hovering in the high 80s and low 90s. Penfolds' Grange Hermitage scored 94 - so did Cullen Wines' 1995 Cabernet Merlot. Yep, there's some beauties here.

On hearing the good news, the MRRWC immediately bought a supply of these stunning wines. We have created a half dozen to die for. You read about them in the Australian, now here's your chance to get your hands on perhaps the best wine six pack in Australia. Here's the wines you will get and what James Halliday rated them:

  Ashbrook 1997 Semillon - 87 Points
James has selected this beautiful wine every year for the past three years. It is a rich, potent white with a spectrum of deep aromas and flavours ranging from herbaceous through to tropical. It has excellent body and mouth-feel and is drinking well now but will cellar for another three years.

1996 Voyager Estate Chardonnay 90 Points
Even though this wine hails from the home of opulent chardonnays it delights with a delicate subtlety and elegance. It is rich in melon and figgy aromas and flavours. The bouquet and palate are highlighted by soft barrel ferment and malolactic characters.

1994 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 90 Points
Based on performance since 1980 this is probably Australia's greatest chardonnay. It is elegance personified with citrus, pear and melon aromas. There is also a very subtle nuttiness on the palate and a spicy oak nuance that grows with aging.

1996 Vasse Felix Shiraz 87 Points
Another ripper from winemaker Clive Otto. It is a rich, generous wine with a nicely balanced oak bouquet. Dense dark berry flavours and spicy fruit on the palate are nicely integrated with vanillin oak.

1993 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points
Perhaps the best cab. sav. ever released by Cape Mentelle. And that's saying something! The bouquet is dark chocolate, berries and fruit with a hint of oak. An intense yet structured wine on the palate, offering up pungent fruit and chocolate. Finishes with fine tannins.

1995 Cullen Cabernet Merlot 94 Points
This is a classic. The bouquet is drenched in blackcurrant while the palate is a medley of rich, well-balanced fruit integrated with soft oak nuances. The sweet fruit on the palate melts into a fine austerity to give balance and complete style on the finish. A truly great wine.
