If for some odd reason you were cast away on a desert island, and given a choice of six Margaret River reds to ward off the ennui, the preceding half dozen would undoubtedly turn your island sojourn into a little piece of heaven.

For here are six glorious reds which have become the accepted benchmarks of excellence both in Margaret River - and anywhere else, for that matter. Five brilliant cabernets dominate the selection, however the Vasse Felix Shiraz is a sure sign that the variety is undergoing a quiet revolution on the Cape. With time, wonderful things will happen.

But why wait to be marooned? We can supply this outstanding half dozen right now. Just give us a call or fill out our order form.

Moss Wood 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon
This renowned wine features lifted red currant and spicy oak characters, rich mulberry and earthy flavours, and seamless soft tannins. It has good mouth-feel, balanced acidity and a subtle smoky oak finish. Wonderful drunk young for its fruity appeal, but an absolute treat with 10 years cellaring.

  Devil's Lair 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon
Here is a wine perfectly integrated from beginning to end. The red currant scents of blend with herbs into a deep richness that follows through on the palate. ThereÕs a robe of cassis fruit over precisely drawn tannins, giving a smooth density of fruit within a silky texture. The finish is complex without being weighty.

  Cape Mentelle 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon
This deep red-purple wine features a spotlessly clean bouquet. Beautifully articulated and perfectly ripened cabernet sauvignon on the palate, with a wholly seductive blend of cassis and dark chocolate, finishing with soft but persistent tannins.

  1996 Vasse Felix Shiraz
Another ripper from winemaker Clive Otto. It is a rich, generous wine with a nicely balanced oak bouquet. Dense dark berry flavours and spicy fruit on the palate are nicely integrated with vanillin oak. It is a powerful, silky, concentrated wine with a fine lingering finish.

Leeuwin Estate Arts Series Cabernet Sauvignon 1993
Brilliant pellucid deep red colour. The bouquet is classic smoky oak over rich fruit. The palate follows through with masses of restrained sweet fruit and soft oak traces. A slight astringency should diminish with age, while the addition of small amounts of merlot, malbec and petit verdot will develop nicely.

  1995 Cullen Cabernet Merlot
This is a classic. The bouquet is drenched in blackcurrant while the palate is a medley of rich, well-balanced fruit integrated with soft oak nuances. The sweet fruit on the palate melts into a fine austerity to give balance and complete style on the finish. A truly great wine. Call us and order your six pack today!
