If any grape
has proved its promise in Margaret River
lately it would have to be that Australian icon,
Shiraz. With more regional vineyards now planting it, and the existing
vines aging gracefully, the variety will undoubtedly join cabernet,
semillon and chardonnay as a premium hallmark of the appellation.
The gorgeous
Vasse Felix Shiraz, our People's Choice winner, is the brain child
of the masterly Clive Otto, one of several fastidious young winemakers
working away to create huge, fruit driven Shiraz that will knock
your socks off.
Another
vineyard with a scintillating future in the variety is the Amberley
Estate. Winemaker Eddie Price proved with the multi-award winning
Amberley 1995 Shiraz that the grape is in love with the Cape region.
And so
much for good Shiraz only coming from old vines. The 1995 Amberley
was only the second vintage made by the winery. Watch out, Coonawarra
and Barossa. It's us again!
