Arlewood Estate

A twisting road through about a kilometre of bush in Willyabrup leads to the vineyards of Arlewood Estate, a little piece of Paradise and the creation of Liz and John Wojturski.

Situated on the gravelly loams for which the Valley is famous, Arlewood is just a shouting distance from Ashbrook,

Vasse Felix and Cullen Wines, and there is no doubt that this location is now producing some of the finest wines the Margaret River Region has to offer.

Tasting Notes

1994 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Shows vibrant dark plum and scarlet colours. The aromas reveal deep concentrated blackcurrant fruit with layers of spice, mint and powdery oak. The palate is soft, round and fruity. Tannins are beautifully balanced.

1996 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc

Fresh cut grass and lemon zest aromas are complemented by subtle use of new French oak. The palate is medium weight with tropical and citrus fruit characters. The finish is refreshing, clean and crisp.

Chapman's Creek

Chapman's Creek vineyard has been planted since 1989 and specialises in Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc.

The owner, Tony Lord, was formerly publisher of the London-based Decanter magazine, widely considered to be the world's best wine publication.

However after Tony sold the magazine for an Òoffer too good to refuseÓ he returned to tend his vines. The Chenin Blanc has already bagged this promising winery a major award.

Un-Oaked Chardonnay 1996

Proving very popular for its fresh, clean zesty aroma with touches of newly picked limes. Pristine fruit flavour, dry and flinty, very mouth watering with lovely fruit on the middle palate.

Shiraz 1994

Deep colour. Very classic varietal aroma of white pepper and a touch of oak spice. Quite dry but powerful flavour, with a firmness in the mouth of a deep, maturing red wine.

Driftwood Estate

Driftwood is spread over 50 acres of rich grape growing country at the Yallingup end of the Cape. Planting of Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz commenced in 1989.

Winemakers Maria Melsom and Steve Pester are strong believers in hands on winemaking and their Òvineyard to bottleÓ approach is already bearing fruit with the wines already enjoying acclaim in national wine shows and from visitors to the cellar door.

Redgate Wines

Redgate owner Bill Ullinger worked as an engineer before he decided to turn his hand to producing wines. We are glad he did.

Planting of the vineyard, which is several kilometres south of Margaret River, began in 1977 and the wineries produced consistently good wines.

The best of these is the Cabernet Sauvignon, which has won a swag of national and WA awards, beginning with the prestigious 1984 Montgomery Trophy at the Adelaide Show for the 1992 Cab. Sav.

1994 Bin 588 Cabernet

This delightful wine is composed entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet berry fruits are integrated with spicy vanillan oak, soft tannins and a minty undertone. Although drinking well now, it will also cellar well.

1996 Chenin Blanc

Ripe passionfruit aromas fill the nose, backed by a delicate grassy undertone. The palate is soft, dominated by pineapple and tropical fruits which leads to a vibrant citrus finish.

Treeton Estate

The Treeton Estate vineyard was planted in 1986 by owner David McGowan and the first vintage of Shiraz was produced in 1991 by Neil Gallagher of Woody Nook.

The wines have steadily improved with the Shiraz showing the most promise.

The 1993 vintage was made by Maria Melsom, who has picked up a number of awards for her winemaking prowess. Treeton wines are growing in popularity and are available in bottle shops and restaurants in the region.

Willespie

Willespie is situated in the beautiful heart of the Willyabrup region. Grown under ideal cool climate conditions, the wines feature elegance, intense varietal characters and excellent aging potential.

Established in 1976, Willespie wines are now sold in niche markets both domestically and internationally.

Willespie has endeavoured over the last few years to offer a well defined choice of fresh young wines as well as its more mature styles, which have been well cellared.

Semillon 1991

This is an excellent dry dinner wine with complex Margaret River fruit characters, some astute wood treatment and the magic five years maturity. Could still age further for the more mature palate.

1993 Cabernet Sauvignon

A rich, full-bodied cool climate dry red table wine, typical of the powerful Margaret River style. It has been aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Excellent on those cool winter nights!
