  Winemaker's Choice: Andrew Forsell

Redgate winemaker Andrew Forsell's wine experience is vast and varied, and his knowledge shows through in the excellent range of wines produced at the multi-award winning winery.

Andrew says his favourite Margaret River styles are the big, bold fruit driven reds. The Redgate Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding example of these, and has gone from strength to strength since he took over winemaking in 1995. But you can't choose your own here. What is his favourite?

"I like drinking a whole heap of them!" he said. "But if I was forced to choose I'd have to say the Vasse Felix Shiraz and the Cape Mentelle Zinfandel. They are great, big fruit driven reds - the type I like best."

The Vasse Felix Shiraz has a bouquet drenched in dark cherries, plums and chocolate. The palate is generally medium weight with big plum, vanillan oak and tarry leather nuances. The tannins are grainy with a long balance, combined beautifully with the the sweet middle palate which has oodles of rich briary fruit and charry oak. A Margaret River beauty.

It's little wonder Andrew enjoys the Cape Mentelle Zin. This mighty wine has an aroma bursting with black currant, Eastern spices and briary blackberries with a satisfying whack of biscuity oak. The palate is fresh and lively with a fruit concentration and flavour penetration that leaves other reds for dead. The alcohol levels and powdery tannins provide a perfect counter-point to the rich mid-palate and support the overall balance of the wine.
