Cape Grace

You could be forgiven for not knowing much about Cape Grace. Hidden down a gravel road (Leeuwin Estate was as well for many years), and only established in 1996, with their first vintage in 2001, it is easy to miss. But you would be missing a winery that managed to win best wine at the 2001 Sheralton Wine Awards for their first vintage - a Cabernet.

Cape Grace is owned by Robert and Karen Karri-Davies. Robert is the great-grandson of timber baron M.C. Davies of Karridale - one of the founders of Margaret River. Robert and Karen tiny 15 hectare vineyard is apparently the land that was originally identified as the prime land for grapes in the whole district by Vasse Felix, but was not available back in 1966.

After all that early success you might think Robert and Karen would be resting on their laurals. Not so; in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2004 Edition Cape Grace is included in the “Ten of the Best New Wineries. More recently they have been winning awards for their Chardonnay as well as their always great reds. Naturally you can find their flagship cabernet sauvignon here, as well as some of their other wines. Enjoy.
